Child Tax Credit Eligibility

|

The Child Tax Credit was expanded as part of the American Rescue Plan. The total credit has been increased from $2,000 to $3,000 per child 6-17 years old and $3,600 per child 5 and under. Single filers earning $75,000 or less per year in modified adjusted gross income and couples filing jointly earning $150,000 or less per year can qualify for the full child tax credit for each of their dependents. Taxpayers earning above those levels will gradually see their payments phase out. Important changes to the Child Tax Credit will help many families get advance payments of the Child Tax Credit starting in the summer of 2021. Half the total credit amount will be paid in advance monthly payments and you will claim the other half when you file your 2021 income tax return. IRS will issue the first advance payment on July 15, 2021.

If you filed a 2020 tax return, you can check on your enrollment and request the advance payment at the following link: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-update-portal

If you are not required to file Federal Income Tax you are still eligible and should use the Non-filer tool at the following link: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/child-tax-credit-non-filer-sign-up-tool

Attached you will find a Child Tax Credit FAQ for further information.
