In follow up to the article on increasing the shelter allowance, attached you will find charts showing the differences by County in NYS between the current Shelter Allowance and the FY2023 Fair Market Rent (FMR). These charts provide examples that demonstrate the gap between shelter allowance and FMR for (1) one and (3) person households. As you will see from the charts, there is not one county in NYS where the shelter allowance is even close to the FMR for that community. It is not uncommon, especially for smaller households on public assistance to be paying 100% of their public assistance grants for rent.
We encourage you to use this information to provide comments to OTDA regarding increasing the shelter allowance.
