The Empire Justice Center released their Policy Matters newsletter for September 2021. This edition covers efforts at federal SSI reform, their 2022 policy agenda and an update on the Sanctions bill. Of particular interest – in 2014 a new state law improved the process by which public assistance recipients can respond to an allegation they have failed to comply with welfare work requirements. The bill was passed but was modified to only applying to New York City. Please read the attachment that includes both the newsletter and a Memorandum of Support to expand the law to include all of New York State. The law provides common sense protection against the imposition of unwarranted and harsh sanctions.
